What is a foundation model in plain terms?
It is a large, general-purpose AI trained on broad data that other products get built on top of. Rather than each company training its own AI from scratch, thousands of tools share a handful of these base models underneath.
Is a foundation model the same as a frontier model?
They overlap but are not identical. Foundation model describes the role, a broad base that apps are built on, while frontier model describes the position, the most capable models at the leading edge. A frontier model is often used as a foundation, but many foundation models are not frontier-level.
Do the AI tools I use all come from the same foundation model?
Often, yes, more than people realize. Because a small number of foundation models power a huge range of products, two apps that look unrelated may be running on the same underlying base. It helps explain why many AI tools feel similar.
